An apple dealer normally spends $3000 when buying a supply, but apple prices have risen dramatically. With no choice but to restock, being a savvy businessman, he decides to buy only $1500 worth, reasoning he'll spend his remaining $1500 when apple prices are lower. Shortly thereafter, growing conditions improve, crop output increases and apple prices begin to come down. He buys more, paying about 20% less per bushel, but again uses only a portion of his available cash. A few months later he buys again, since now bushels of apples are selling for half of what he initially paid. Still, he keeps an availability of cash. Time passes and soon apples are everywhere and prices are absolutely cheap. With bushels now selling for prices lower than he can remember and 60% lower than his initial purchase, he smartly spends nearly all of what remains of his cash. To his delight, his remaining money buys him even more bushels than he had initially purchased months before. After a few quick calculations he finds he now owns over three times as many bushels as he would have, had he spent all his cash when he made his first purchase! Cold weather arrives sooner than expected and prices rise gradually as apple output declines. He needs to sell some of his abundant stock, as he has little cash available, but with apple supplies dwindling, he knows it will be easy to sell portions of his apple inventory- when he's ready! He considers his situation cautiously, reasoning that soon there will be even more profit to be made. He remains patient. After all, his entire inventory, more than he's ever owned before, is appreciating in value each time prices rise. Shrewdly, he holds off selling portions of his inventory when approached by rival apple dealers. Prices continue to rise toward their normal, peak-winter levels. Finally, when the time seems right, he sells a significant amount of bushels to "lock-in" a portion of the profits he's showing on paper and to replenish his cash situation. He vows to sell more only when prices have reached their expected winter highs. With ample cash in his pocket now, the apple dealer waits purposefully for the highest prices to hit the market; prices at or near the same level he initially bought his $1500 supply at. He knows that, at some point, they will inevitably rise back to that level, if not even higher. Sure enough, $9.00 prices once again return, but since some of winter remains, he sells a smaller amount than he had in his previous transaction. He's determined never to run out of apples again. Upon re-calculating his situation, he finds that even after his two recent sales, he still owns more than 50% more bushels than he had initially bought when he'd been so desperate. And amazingly, he has even more cash in his pocket now than he'd left himself after his long -since completed "emergency" purchase! With a large stock of apples still in his inventory and a bank account with a greater amount of cash than he had originally left himself with, he does the math and finds he's made a 42% profit at the day's increased current price- the SAME price the emergency purchase had been made at! Not only had he thrived when most apple dealers, who had initially spent all their available money, had nothing to show for their entire season, he now knew how to "set the table" for future long term growth and looked forward to the next apple season. And he also knew that each time the same cycle repeated itself, he'd make even greater multiplied percentages of profit! He immediately formulated his own "apple calculator", which he designed in such a way that WHATEVER the conditions might be at the time, he'd know exactly what to do to always maintain a position in and profit from the apple market.
